P0C58 sets when the S1/S3 winding circuit of the motor B resolver shows a reference level above its window, as from an open lead drifting up or a short to voltage. GM limits are 4.5 V on the 2011 and 2016 Volt, 4.9 V on the 2019 Volt and 3.0 V on the 2012 two-mode trucks, with the fast high-side timing of 20 out of 30 samples on early cars. This is one of the most frequent resolver codes on the first-generation Volt. GM's first note PIC5856 from 2013 already paired P0C58 with P0C62, the S2/S4 high code, on 2011-13 Volts: if wiring is fine, a new motor B position sensor goes in, a part ordered through GM's technical assistance center, and update the module calibration.
High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.
Symptoms
- Check engine lamp, frequently together with P0C62
- Reduced propulsion power
- Fault may only be in history memory
Most likely causes
- Faulty motor B position sensor on 2011-13 Volt and 2014-16 ELR (GM PIC5856)
- Open S1 or S3 line or spread terminal at the resolver connector
- Motor control module running an older calibration
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0C58 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- C: Subsystem depends on the code range
- 58: Specific fault in that system
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep driving with code P0C58?
