P0C62 means the reference level on the S2/S4 winding circuit of the motor B resolver climbs above its upper limit. GM triggers it at 4.5 V on the 2011 and 2016 Volt and ELR, 4.9 V on the 2019 Volt and 3.0 V on the 2012 two-mode trucks; on the 2016 Volt the level must stay high for 0.2125 s within 0.3125 s, rated Type B over two trips. P0C62 shows up in every GM note of the PIC5856 series, from the 2013 original to version F of 2019, for 2011-13 Volt and 2014-16 ELR, usually paired with P0C58 and sometimes P0C57. Because both windings of the same resolver report high at once, GM's remedy after clean wiring checks is a new motor B position sensor plus the latest module calibration.
High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.
Symptoms
- Service engine soon lamp, often with P0C58
- Reduced propulsion power
- Code may return after clearing until the sensor is replaced
Most likely causes
- Faulty motor B position sensor on 2011-13 Volt and 2014-16 ELR (GM PIC5856)
- Open S2 or S4 wire or terminal backed out of the connector
- Drive motor generator control module without the latest calibration
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0C62 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- C: Subsystem depends on the code range
- 62: Specific fault in that system
Frequently asked questions
