P0D3B: Battery Charger A Input Current Sensor Circuit High

P0D3B reports that the charger A input current sensor reads too high. On the 2022 Outlander PHEV Mitsubishi interprets a sensor voltage above 4.658 V, equivalent to more than about 54 A, lasting 0.5 s as a short to the supply side; charging ends and the integrated charger/DC-DC unit is the listed part. GM's Volt charger module (2011 and 2014 tables) sets the code when the reported AC current exceeds 24.78 A for 160 of 200 ms and lights the MIL as a Type A fault. The low counterpart is P0D3A; a reading that looks valid but carries an offset is P0D39. Since the grid cannot push that much current through the charger unnoticed, the sensor path is the first suspect. Owners see AC charging refuse to start or quit shortly after plugging in.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • AC charging quits shortly after plugging in
  • MIL on (GM)

Most likely causes

  • Current sensor signal shorted to supply voltage inside the charger
  • Failed on-board charger/DC-DC unit
  • Genuine overcurrent at the charger input from an internal short

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

What each character of P0D3B means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • D: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 3B: Specific fault in that system
