P0D40 is the high-signal fault of the charger's input voltage sensor. GM's Volt charger module (2011 and 2014 tables) sets it when the measured AC peak exceeds 422 V for 160 of 200 ms and lights the MIL as a Type A fault; in the 2016 and 2019 Volt the controller reads a duty-cycle signal and fails it at 92 % and above or at a constant 0 %, Type B over two trips. Mitsubishi's 2022 Outlander PHEV reads a sensor voltage above 3.161 V, corresponding to more than 492 V, for 0.5 s as a short to power, stops charging and replaces the charger/DC-DC unit. Household and Level 2 supplies do not reach these values, so the sensor path or the signal line is normally to blame. P0D3F is the low counterpart.
High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.
Symptoms
- AC charging is refused
- MIL on (GM)
Most likely causes
- Voltage sensor signal shorted to supply inside the charger
- Open duty-cycle signal line between charger and controller (2016-2019 Volt)
- Failed on-board charger
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
What each character of P0D40 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- D: Subsystem depends on the code range
- 40: Specific fault in that system
Frequently asked questions
