P0D5F: Hybrid/EV Battery Pack Cooling Fan 2 Sense Circuit/Open

Where a traction battery is cooled by two fans, each one can report its actual speed back to the controller on a separate sense line. P0D5F is the general circuit code for that return path of fan 2: the line is open or delivers nothing the controller can evaluate. No manufacturer documents P0D5F publicly. Volkswagen's 2014 Touareg Hybrid reads the same fan 2 feedback as a voltage but only defines P0D60 to P0D62, and Toyota patents show why the signal matters: measured fan speed is compared with the speed the duty command should give. CARB requires electrical inputs of battery thermal management to be monitored. Fan 2 may keep turning, yet its operation can no longer be confirmed, so the pack may be protected by reduced power. Drive-side faults of fan 2 are P0A96 and its siblings; fan 1 feedback uses P0BC7 to P0BCB.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • Hybrid system warning or check engine light
  • Reduced electric assist or charging power when the battery warms up
  • Often no noticeable change while fan 2 still runs

Most likely causes

  • Broken feedback wire or terminal pushed out at the fan 2 connector
  • Corroded or loose connector between fan 2 and the battery controller
  • Speed signal output inside the fan 2 motor electronics failed
  • Feedback input of the battery control module defective

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0D5F means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • D: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 5F: Specific fault in that system
