P0DD4: Hybrid/EV Battery Cell Balancing Circuit K

P0DD4 is the electrical fault code for balancing circuit K, the eleventh group, so it only exists on packs with at least eleven balancing channels. Public maker documents for this exact code were not found; Ford's summaries give K only to the stuck faults P0DD5 and P0DD6. How a monitoring chip catches broken wiring is shown in Infineon's TLE9012DQU data sheet: during its round-robin cycle the chip sinks a test current of about 15 mA into each balancing pin, odd channels in one cycle and even ones in the next, and flags a broken wire or missing load when the resulting change in cell voltage falls outside a set window. CARB 13 CCR 1968.2 requires such components to be monitored on hybrids. Related: P0DD5 to P0DD7.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light and hybrid system warning
  • Missing or implausible cell voltages for group K in the scan tool
  • Reduced charging or drive power

Most likely causes

  • Open wire or loose cell tap in group K
  • Corrosion or moisture at the connector of the monitoring board for K
  • Defective monitoring chip or external balancing part of channel K

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0DD4 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • D: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • D4: Specific fault in that system
