P0DDC: Hybrid/EV Battery Cell Balancing Circuit M

P0DDC reports an electrical fault of balancing circuit M, the thirteenth group, which only large packs with at least thirteen channels possess. No maker publishes this exact code; in Ford's BECM documents M appears only as stuck on (P0DDD) and stuck off (P0DDE). LaunchPoint's patent US8598840B2 describes how such faults can be found while the system runs: built-in tests feed every cell measurement its own distinct test signal and are run from a circuit domain kept separate from the balancing and measuring electronics they check, so one failure cannot hide itself. Wiring breaks, damaged connectors and chip faults are typical findings. CARB 13 CCR 1968.2 requires these parts to be watched on hybrids. Related: P0DDD to P0DDF.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light and hybrid warning
  • Battery controller restricting power or charging

Most likely causes

  • Broken sense or balancing wire of group M
  • Damaged or poorly seated connector at the board for M
  • Fault in the monitoring electronics of channel M

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0DDC means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • D: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • DC: Specific fault in that system
