P0DF4 reports that temperature sensor B of the generator inverter delivers an electrically valid signal whose value does not fit the other sensors. Mitsubishi documents the check for the Outlander PHEV: a single time in each drive cycle, following at least 600 s of standstill and with the IGBTs switched off, the V-phase high-side sensor may not differ by more than 47 °C from the other two phase sensors for 0.1 s; otherwise P0DF4-00 is stored and the power drive unit is replaced. Volvo lists ECM P0DF400 for 2022-on T8 plug-in hybrids and warns it can be misdetected, showing Propulsion System Service Required; for builds from week 202147 to 202446 ECM software 3.4.4 cures it. Out-of-range signals are P0DF5 and P0DF6.
High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.
Symptoms
- Message such as Propulsion System Service Required
- Engine warning light on
- Turtle symbol and reduced power in some cases
Most likely causes
- Control software misdetection (Volvo T8, ECM update available)
- Sensor in the power module drifted or stuck at one value
- Internal fault in the power drive unit (Mitsubishi replaces the unit)
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0DF4 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- D: Subsystem depends on the code range
- F4: Specific fault in that system
Frequently asked questions
