P0DFF: Battery Charger Coolant Control Valve Control Circuit High

P0DFF is the short-to-voltage case for the valve that cools the on-board charger. The controller sees the drive line high while commanding it low. No manufacturer documents P0DFF publicly. The closest published logic is GM's 2011 Volt monitor for battery coolant valve A (P0CE3). It watches for a high sense level on drive 1 while the valve is stopped or moving forward, above 9 V system voltage, and stores a two-trip Type B code only after 90 bad results in 100 samples taken at 6.25 ms intervals. If the wire is stuck at battery potential the actuator stays powered, and the valve can travel to its end position rather than stopping where it was. If that leaves the charger uncooled, charging power drops. Usual causes are chafed insulation touching a powered conductor or an output stage that fails to turn off. Ground short is P0DFE.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • Charging slower or charger warning
  • Valve audibly running to its end stop
  • Driving normally unaffected

Most likely causes

  • Control wire shorted to a supply voltage
  • Output stage in the controlling module will not switch off
  • Internal fault in the valve actuator

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium

What each character of P0DFF means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • D: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • FF: Specific fault in that system
