P0DFE: Battery Charger Coolant Control Valve Control Circuit Low

P0DFE means the control line of the charger coolant valve reads low, usually because it is shorted to ground somewhere between driver and valve. No manufacturer documents P0DFE publicly. GM's 2011 Volt tables show how such a check works on battery coolant valve A (P0CE2): with system voltage above 9 V and the valve commanded in reverse, a low sense level on drive 1 counts as a failure, and the code needs a fault in 90 of 100 checks spaced 6.25 ms apart before it is set as a two-trip Type B code. For the charger valve a similar logic is likely but not published. A ground short typically freezes the valve where it is, so the charger may be left without coolant and lower its power. Look for chafed wires and wet connectors. Open circuit is P0DFD.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • Reduced charging power, longer charging time
  • Charger warning or charging stops
  • Driving normally unaffected

Most likely causes

  • Control wire chafed through and shorted to ground
  • Coolant or water in the valve connector
  • Internal short in the valve actuator

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium

What each character of P0DFE means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • D: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • FE: Specific fault in that system
