P0ECA treats the temperature sensors of the hybrid or traction battery as one system: the battery controller compares the readings with each other and flags the group when one of them strays from the rest or shows an impossible value. Ford documents it for its 2019 hybrid and plug-in models. The BECM runs the check all the time and sets P0ECA after three or more 5-second events in which a thermistor deviates from the average by more than 25 °C, reads above 95 °C or reads below −50 °C. Bentley stores P0ECA00 in address 0021, the 48 V super capacitor of the Bentayga's Dynamic Ride, alongside P0A9E and P0AC8; the cure is software version 114, after which the part number ends in F. GM files comparable checks under single-sensor codes such as P0A9C instead. Battery power is reduced.
High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.
Symptoms
- Hybrid or battery warning, MIL depending on manufacturer
- Reduced electric power or charging rate
- On the Bentayga, Dynamic Ride fault message and no roll compensation
Most likely causes
- One battery thermistor drifting away from the others
- Battery controller software misjudging the comparison (Bentley super capacitor, update 114)
- Loose or corroded connector on the temperature sense harness inside the pack
- Genuine local hot spot, e.g. a blocked cooling channel at one module
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0ECA means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- E: Subsystem depends on the code range
- CA: Specific fault in that system
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep driving with code P0ECA?
If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.
What causes code P0ECA?
The most common causes are: one battery thermistor drifting away from the others; battery controller software misjudging the comparison (Bentley super capacitor, update 114); loose or corroded connector on the temperature sense harness inside the pack.
