P0ECB indicates that the voltage measurements of the hybrid/EV battery contradict each other. Battery controllers usually capture the same voltage along more than one path, for example the whole pack directly and as the sum of all cell readings, or each half of the pack against its own cells; once these paths drift apart, at least one sensor must be wrong. No manufacturer documents P0ECB publicly. GM runs exactly this comparison under P0ABB: a gap of more than 12 V between pack voltage and cell sum in 20 of 25 samples is a Type A fault. Ford checks each half pack against the total of its cells and fails above 42 V on plug-in and 38 V on full hybrids held for one second (P0B15, P0B1A). Since state of charge is no longer reliable, power is limited.
High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.
Symptoms
- MIL and hybrid system warning
- Limited electric power, unstable state of charge display
- Contactors may stay open, vehicle may not reach ready mode
Most likely causes
- Drifting pack or half-pack voltage sensor in the battery controller
- Loose or corroded cell sense lead falsifying the cell sum
- Internal fault of the cell monitoring electronics
- Measurement taken on the wrong side of a contactor that is not fully closed
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0ECB means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- E: Subsystem depends on the code range
- CB: Specific fault in that system
