P200D is the overheating code for a particulate filter on bank 2 and therefore only appears where the exhaust of the second bank has its own filter and temperature sensors. No manufacturer documents P200D publicly; the published diesel layouts of GM, Ford and Hino run one filter and report its overheating as P200C. Those tables show how such a limit is built: a fixed ceiling between roughly 800 and 950 °C on the sensor ahead of or behind the filter, confirmed over many samples or a few seconds, and stored at once with the warning lamp. On a twin-filter engine the bank 2 check looks only at its own sensors, so a fault limited to one side, such as one leaking injector, an overloaded filter on that bank or a skewed sensor, separates the two codes. The control unit will usually stop regeneration and may limit power.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the light is on steadily, take a highway drive or go to a repair shop soon. If the car is in limp mode or the light is flashing, do not push the engine.
Bank 2 is the side without cylinder 1, so it only exists on V or boxer engines.
Symptoms
- Malfunction indicator lamp on
- Regeneration stopped
- Power may be limited
Most likely causes
- Bank 2 filter overloaded with soot before regeneration
- Leaking injector or excess fuel on bank 2 cylinders
- Exhaust temperature sensor on bank 2 reading too high
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: hard
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P200D means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 2: Generic code: same on every make
- 0: Subsystem depends on the code range
- 0D: Specific fault in that system
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep driving with code P200D?
If the light is on steadily, take a highway drive or go to a repair shop soon. If the car is in limp mode or the light is flashing, do not push the engine.
What causes code P200D?
The most common causes are: bank 2 filter overloaded with soot before regeneration; leaking injector or excess fuel on bank 2 cylinders; exhaust temperature sensor on bank 2 reading too high.
