P2017: Intake Manifold Runner Position Sensor/Switch Circuit High (Bank 1)

P2017 is the mirror case of P2016: the bank 1 flap feedback is stuck near the supply rail. With a pulled-up input that happens when the signal or sensor ground opens, or when the signal wire touches a voltage source. Ford's limit is 4.7 V for 5 s, Volkswagen uses 4.85 V on the 3.0 TDI and 4.88 V on the 3.0 TSI hybrid of the 2014 Touareg. On GM's 2018 diesel swirl actuator the period is again pinned at 30 ms but the duty cycle reads 100 %, counted in 50 of 62 samples; the 2025 SENT version flags a raw value over 99 % in 480 of 600, both Type B with MIL after two trips. Chrysler's short runner valve bulletins cover P2017 together with P2016, which points to shared supply or connector faults rather than two failed parts.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? You can drive in moderation. Get it repaired soon, because a loose flap can cause major damage on some engines.

Bank 1 is the side of the engine with cylinder 1. Inline engines only have this bank.

Symptoms

  • Check engine lamp on
  • Flaps parked in default position, slightly changed running at part load

Most likely causes

  • Open sensor ground or signal circuit
  • Signal wire shorted to the 5 V reference or battery voltage
  • Spread or corroded terminal in the valve or sensor plug
  • Position sensor or actuator electronics faulty

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2017 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 0: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 17: Specific fault in that system
