P2032: Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor 2)

P2032 means the signal of exhaust gas temperature sensor 2 on bank 1 is below its valid range. What that means electrically depends on the sensor type. On the Opel/GM 2.0 CDTi in the Saab 9-5 (2010) sensor 2 sits in the particulate filter and its voltage falls as it gets hotter, so a reading below 0.4 V for more than 1 s points to a short to ground; the code is Type A there. GM's 2009 Duramax uses the opposite characteristic and fails below 0.307 V, equivalent to -40 °C, for 300 s, which is typical of an open or grounded signal. GM's 2018 diesels compare against a resistance-equivalent limit below 142 Ω as a Type B code, Ford's 2023 diesels against 0.10 V within 2 s. So check the wiring diagram before deciding whether low means a short or an open. Without the sensor the ECM cannot control filter temperature and usually blocks regeneration.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the light is on steadily, take a highway drive or go to a repair shop soon. If the car is in limp mode or the light is flashing, do not push the engine.

Bank 1 is the side of the engine with cylinder 1. Inline engines only have this bank.

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp on
  • DPF regeneration inhibited, soot load rises

Most likely causes

  • Signal wire chafed to ground on the exhaust
  • Internal sensor failure
  • Damaged or corroded connector

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2032 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 0: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 32: Specific fault in that system
