P2083: Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit Intermittent (Bank 2 Sensor 1)

P2083 reports an unsteady signal from exhaust temperature sensor 1 on bank 2: the value changes by more than the exhaust can physically manage between two readings, or briefly drops out. Only one maker documents it publicly. Infiniti bulletin ITB17-050 lists P2083 with P0544–P0549 and P2080–P2082 for Infiniti's Q50 (model years 2016–2017) and Q60 (2017) with the 3.0 L VR30DDTT twin-turbo V6, which has one sensor per bank, and prescribes an ECM reprogram. Ford's 2014 petrol code list includes P2083 with a lamp marker. No threshold is published for bank 2; GM's bank 1 counterpart P2081 shows the usual approach of counting fast steps in a window of samples. Before replacing parts, wiggle-test the connector and lead while watching live data. A plausible but wrong steady value would be P2082.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the light is on steadily, take a highway drive or go to a repair shop soon. If the car is in limp mode or the light is flashing, do not push the engine.

Bank 2 is the side without cylinder 1, so it only exists on V or boxer engines.

Symptoms

  • Engine warning lamp on
  • Bank 2 exhaust temperature flickering in live data

Most likely causes

  • Intermittent contact in the bank 2 sensor connector
  • ECM software (Infiniti VR30DDTT bulletin)
  • Lead damaged by turbocharger or exhaust heat

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2083 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 0: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 83: Specific fault in that system
