P2163: Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor A Maximum Stop Performance

P2163 concerns position signal A at the upper end of its travel: with the throttle or pedal resting on its maximum mechanical stop, the reading or the learned full-open value lies outside the band the calibration accepts. On Ford layouts A is the first throttle body sensor, while D to F belong to the pedal. Ford lists P2163 for the 2014 Boss 302S with MIL and wrench lamp. A Visteon patent shows the idea: the motor presses the plate onto its fully open stop for about 60 ms, the sensor value is stored, and a learned stop outside roughly 80 to 110 degrees is reported as a failure. Carbon, a bent stop or a worn sensor track are typical causes. P2109 is the matching closed-stop check; P2164-P2168 test the other letters. Reduced power is possible.

High severity. Can I keep driving?Be careful: the car may suddenly lose power. If it goes into limp mode, get off the highway and calmly make your way to a repair shop.

Symptoms

  • Check engine and throttle warning lamps on
  • Engine does not reach full power
  • Limp mode with limited throttle opening

Most likely causes

  • Carbon or a bent stop keeps the plate from reaching full opening
  • Sensor A track worn at the full-open end
  • Replacement throttle body not matching or not relearned
  • Contact resistance in the sensor connector shifting the signal

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2163 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 1: Air and fuel
  • 63: Specific fault in that system
