P2172: Throttle Actuator Control System - Sudden High Air Flow Detected

P2172 is set when the engine abruptly takes in far more air than the throttle opening can explain, as if a large leak had appeared behind the throttle plate. The controller compares measured airflow (MAF or MAP based) with the flow its throttle model expects and reacts to a quick jump in the difference. FCA uses the code widely under the name High Airflow/Vacuum Leak Detected (Instantaneous Accumulation) and lists it in many PCM reflash bulletins, among them 18-030-17 for the 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia 2.0 turbo; a STAR case on the 2019 Ram 1500 traces it to spread MAP sensor terminals. A Ford patent describes how closed-throttle leak flow is estimated and corrected against measured airflow. A slipped hose or an open PCV line are typical. P2173 is the slow version.

High severity. Can I keep driving?Be careful: the car may suddenly lose power. If it goes into limp mode, get off the highway and calmly make your way to a repair shop.

Symptoms

  • Check engine lamp
  • High or hunting idle, hissing noise from the engine bay
  • Power reduction or limp mode

Most likely causes

  • Hose, PCV line or brake booster line slipped off or split
  • Spread or pushed-out terminals at the MAP sensor connector
  • Engine software with oversensitive detection (reflash available)
  • Leaking throttle body gasket

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2172 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 1: Air and fuel
  • 72: Specific fault in that system
