P2174: Throttle Actuator Control System - Sudden Low Air Flow Detected

P2174 means the airflow fell abruptly well below what the current throttle opening should deliver. The controller sees a fast negative gap between measured airflow and its throttle-model estimate, as happens when the intake is suddenly blocked, the plate jams or a hose collapses under vacuum. No manufacturer documents P2174 publicly. FCA's sibling codes P2172/P2173 for excess air show the same model comparison in practice, and a Ford patent explains how estimated and measured throttle flow are reconciled; California's OBD rule requires such air-handling inputs to be monitored. Look for a collapsed or kinked intake duct, snow, leaves or a bag over the air inlet, a sticking throttle or a faulty airflow sensor. Expect a sudden loss of power. P2175 is the slow variant.

High severity. Can I keep driving?Be careful: the car may suddenly lose power. If it goes into limp mode, get off the highway and calmly make your way to a repair shop.

Symptoms

  • Sudden loss of power
  • Check engine and throttle warning lamps
  • Possible limp mode or stalling

Most likely causes

  • Air inlet suddenly blocked by snow, leaves or debris
  • Intake duct collapsed or kinked
  • Throttle plate sticking short of the commanded angle
  • Airflow or manifold pressure sensor reading too low

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2174 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 1: Air and fuel
  • 74: Specific fault in that system
