P2199: Intake Air Temperature Sensor 1/2 Correlation

P2199 compares two intake air temperature readings that should be close, typically one in the air mass sensor and one further downstream in the intake manifold or a combined pressure and temperature sensor. Each circuit can be fine on its own; the fault is the disagreement. GM sets it when the two values differ by more than 55 °C in 40 of 50 samples taken every 100 ms, as a Type B code with MIL after two trips (2016 and 2018 tables). VW's 2014 Touareg uses a much tighter limit of 10 °C between the two manifold temperatures. CARB requires such rationality checks for input sensors under (e)(15). Stellantis lists it among the codes addressed by a PCM update for the 2020 RAM 1500 with the 3.0 EcoDiesel V6; there, check the software level first. Circuit faults are P0111 to P0114 (sensor 1) and P0096 to P0099 (sensor 2).

Low severity. Can I keep driving?Yes, you can normally keep driving and take it to a repair shop when convenient.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Usually no noticeable driveability change
  • Scan data shows two clearly different intake temperatures with the engine cold-soaked

Most likely causes

  • One temperature sensor drifted or contaminated
  • Corroded connector or added resistance in one sensor circuit
  • Calibration issue fixed by a PCM update (e.g. RAM 1500 3.0 EcoDiesel 2020)
  • Strong heat soak or hot-air leak near one sensor

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: easy
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2199 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 1: Air and fuel
  • 99: Specific fault in that system

Frequently asked questions

What causes code P2199?

The most common causes are: one temperature sensor drifted or contaminated; corroded connector or added resistance in one sensor circuit; calibration issue fixed by a PCM update (e.g. RAM 1500 3.0 EcoDiesel 2020).
