P2264: Water in Fuel Sensor A Circuit

P2264 is the general circuit code for water-in-fuel sensor A, the probe in the diesel filter or separator that detects water by its conductivity. GM's 2018 diesel tables explain a neat self-test: after the ignition has been off for more than about 8 h, a healthy sensor briefly signals water during the first 0.3 to 1.8 s after power-up. If that pulse is missing in 10 of 14 samples of 100 ms, P2264 sets as a Type C code that turns on the Service Vehicle Soon lamp rather than the MIL; versions exist for sensors wired to the ECM and to the fuel tank zone module. Ford's 2014 PCM table also lists the code. With the circuit faulty, the warning for real water no longer works, so the separator should be drained by hand until it is fixed. P2265 to P2268 split the fault further.

Low severity. Can I keep driving? You can normally keep driving. If it affects the fuel level, do not trust the gauge and refuel earlier than usual.

Symptoms

  • Service lamp or message on, engine runs normally
  • No warning if water actually collects in the separator

Most likely causes

  • Water-in-fuel sensor that no longer performs its power-up self-test
  • Corroded or loose connector at the filter housing, exposed to road spray
  • Open or damaged wire between sensor and ECM or tank zone module
  • Incompatible sensor fitted during a filter change

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: easy

What each character of P2264 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 2: Fuel injection
  • 64: Specific fault in that system
