P22DE: Cylinder 2 Alternative Fuel Injector Control Circuit Low

P22DE stands for a control line of the cylinder 2 gas injector whose voltage is too low. TransEco Energy's AFCM fault table blames a grounded or interrupted wire and turns on the MIL for bi-fuel vehicles; Ford's 2014 OBD code list includes P22DE as a MIL code too. California's OBD rule counts a bi-fuel car among alternate-fueled vehicles just for the periods it actually burns gas, so this monitor matters mainly in gas mode, and on gasoline the car normally behaves as usual. If the grounded wire keeps the injector energized, cylinder 2 is flooded with gas and the plug may foul; a separated wire starves it instead. P22DF is the high side, P22DD the open-circuit code, and P0264 belongs to the gasoline injector.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If you smell gas, do not keep driving or start the engine: move away and call for assistance. With no smell, drive moderately to an authorized shop.

Cylinder 2 is numbered according to the manufacturer: check your engine's manual before working on it.

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp on
  • Rich misfire or fouled spark plug on cylinder 2 in gas mode
  • Gas operation interrupted, engine runs on gasoline

Most likely causes

  • Cylinder 2 injector control wire grounded on engine or body
  • Open wire or pin, reported as Low by modules like the TransEco AFCM
  • Shorted output transistor in the gas control module

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P22DE means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 2: Fuel injection
  • DE: Specific fault in that system
