P2336: Cylinder 1 Above Knock/Combustion Vibration Sensor Threshold

The engine module listens to the knock sensors and assigns each vibration burst to the cylinder whose combustion falls into that crank-angle window, so it can retard spark on one cylinder alone. P2336 means the knock intensity attributed to cylinder 1 has exceeded the calibrated threshold. Stellantis lists P2336 to P2339 in bulletin 09-009-26 (May 2026) for the plug-in hybrid 2.0L turbo four (sales code ECX) in the 2024–2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe and 2023–2025 Grand Cherokee: with the MIL lit and audible knocking, machining debris and casting sand are named as the cause and the whole engine is replaced. GM and Saab file a single knocking cylinder under P0324 instead (more than 8 s). Lasting knock can damage pistons, so the code should be followed up soon.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? You can drive in moderation without pushing the engine. If you hear knocking, avoid full-throttle acceleration.

Cylinder 1 is numbered according to the manufacturer: check your engine's manual before working on it.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Knocking or pinging noise from the engine
  • Less power because spark is retarded

Most likely causes

  • Engine damage from machining debris or casting sand (Stellantis 2.0L PHEV, bulletin 09-009-26)
  • Carbon deposits or hot spots in cylinder 1
  • Fuel with too low octane rating
  • Cylinder 1 running lean (injector delivering too little)

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2336 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 3: Ignition and misfires
  • 36: Specific fault in that system
