P2341: Cylinder 6 Above Knock/Combustion Vibration Sensor Threshold

Cylinder 6 is the last cylinder of inline-six and V6 engines, and P2341 reports that its share of the knock sensor signal has crossed the limit. Modern knock control adjusts ignition timing for every cylinder on its own, so a single cylinder can run retarded while the others keep optimum spark; the code tells which one keeps knocking. How a manufacturer reports this differs: GM and Saab use P0324 for excessive knock on one cylinder over more than 8 s, while knock on more than one cylinder or an improperly bolted sensor leads Saab to the sensor performance codes P0326/P0331. No public manufacturer document using P2341 was found. Check fuel quality, deposits, the plug and the injector of cylinder 6, and whether a loose part is making noise in that crank window.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? You can drive in moderation without pushing the engine. If you hear knocking, avoid full-throttle acceleration.

Cylinder 6 is numbered according to the manufacturer: check your engine's manual before working on it.

Symptoms

  • MIL on
  • Knocking at full throttle or uphill
  • Reduced power

Most likely causes

  • Fuel octane too low for the engine
  • Deposits in the combustion chamber of cylinder 6
  • Loose component or valve train noise read as knock
  • Lean mixture in cylinder 6 from a restricted injector

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2341 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 3: Ignition and misfires
  • 41: Specific fault in that system
