P244D: Exhaust Temperature Too High For Particulate Filter Regeneration (Bank 1)

This is the overheating side of the bank 1 regeneration check. While soot is being burned off, the controller keeps exhaust temperature inside a window; if it climbs past the upper limit, the substrate and the oxidation catalyst risk cracking or melting, so the burn is stopped and P244D is logged. GM names it Catalyst Temperature Too High During Regeneration in its 2011 Duramax tables, without publishing a threshold. Ram's 2025 to 2026 heavy-duty Cummins pickups group it with exhaust temperature sensor faults: the bulletin asks for correct battery voltage and for each sensor to be identified by name and position before parts are replaced. Deutz, in contrast, uses P244D for a burn stopped because it was too cold. Too little heat on bank 1 gives P244C, bank 2 has P244F, and general overtemperature is P2428.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the light is on steadily, take a highway drive or go to a repair shop soon. If the car is in limp mode or the light is flashing, do not push the engine.

Bank 1 is the side of the engine with cylinder 1. Inline engines only have this bank.

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp on
  • Regeneration aborted, filter warning stays on
  • Reduced power to protect the aftertreatment

Most likely causes

  • Too much fuel reaching the exhaust (leaking injector or aftertreatment doser)
  • Heavily overloaded filter burning off too fast
  • Exhaust temperature sensor or its wiring giving implausibly high readings
  • Control software needing an update

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P244D means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 4: Emissions
  • 4D: Specific fault in that system

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep driving with code P244D?

If the light is on steadily, take a highway drive or go to a repair shop soon. If the car is in limp mode or the light is flashing, do not push the engine.

What causes code P244D?

The most common causes are: too much fuel reaching the exhaust (leaking injector or aftertreatment doser); heavily overloaded filter burning off too fast; exhaust temperature sensor or its wiring giving implausibly high readings.
