P250C: Engine Oil Level Sensor Circuit Low

P250C means the oil level sensor's signal line is pulled too low, the classic picture of a short to ground or, depending on the input design, a break that lets the line drop. Deutz describes its P250C-00 the same way: level sensor line grounded or interrupted. Hyundai shows that software can trip it too: on 2023 Kona and Elantra with the 2.0 L Nu Atkinson engine, P250C turned on a warning lamp, and the cure was a PCM reflash that changes how the oil level warning is triggered. Ford also lists P250C for the 2014 BOSS 302S engine module. The opposite fault is P250D, dropouts are P250E. A low level of oil itself is P250F. For the driver the oil level information is lost.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the red oil warning light comes on, stop the car in a safe place and turn off the engine. Do not continue until you have confirmed the level and pressure.

Symptoms

  • Oil level warning lamp on
  • No oil level reading in the cluster

Most likely causes

  • Signal wire shorted to ground near the sump
  • Open circuit or unplugged sensor connector
  • Warning logic in the engine module, fixed by reflash (Hyundai 2.0 Nu)
  • Sensor electronics shorted internally

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium

What each character of P250C means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 5: Speed and idle
  • 0C: Specific fault in that system
