P250D: Engine Oil Level Sensor Circuit High

P250D is stored when the oil level sensor line rises above its valid range. The usual explanation is contact with a positive conductor; with pull-up inputs an interrupted line or missing sensor ground can also drive the signal high. Deutz gives the clearest definition: its EMR controller files P250D-00 as the level sensor shorted to battery. Ford lists P250D in the 2014 BOSS 302S engine code table. No passenger-car maker has published thresholds or a service bulletin for this code. A reading stuck high can mimic a full sump, so a real oil loss might go unreported until P250F logic or the oil pressure switch reacts. The low counterpart is P250C, the erratic one P250E, the generic circuit code P250A.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the red oil warning light comes on, stop the car in a safe place and turn off the engine. Do not continue until you have confirmed the level and pressure.

Symptoms

  • Oil level warning or message
  • Level display permanently at maximum

Most likely causes

  • Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
  • Sensor ground open or signal line interrupted
  • Sensor electronics faulty

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium

What each character of P250D means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 5: Speed and idle
  • 0D: Specific fault in that system
