P2563: Turbocharger Boost Control Position Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance

P2563 means the position feedback of the turbocharger boost control actuator - variable vanes or wastegate - does not match the commanded position, without an open or short being reported. GM's 2009 Duramax diesel table sets it when vane position differs from target by 15 % or more for 5 s (Type B, warning light after two trips). VW's 2014 Passat book treats a position signal above 4.5 V or below 0.3 V as implausible on the 2.0 L TDI (CKRA), and VW bulletin 21-15-06 links P2563 on 2.0 L TDI engines to kinked vacuum hoses, a leaking vacuum diaphragm or a broken adjustment stud on the turbocharger. P2562/P2564/P2565 are circuit faults, P2566 an intermittent signal. Boost is often limited, so power drops noticeably.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive without demanding power and go to a repair shop soon. If you see a lot of blue smoke or hear a metallic noise, shut off the engine.

Symptoms

  • Noticeable loss of power, limp mode
  • Check engine light
  • Underboost code P0299 stored at the same time

Most likely causes

  • Kinked, twisted or leaking vacuum hose to the boost actuator
  • Leaking actuator diaphragm or sticking vanes
  • Broken or missing adjustment stud, actuator travel out of tolerance

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2563 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 5: Speed and idle
  • 63: Specific fault in that system
