P2663 is stored when the control line to solenoid B on bank 2 reads too low, most often a short to ground somewhere between the module and the second cylinder head. On V engines that harness branch often runs along the back of the block or under the intake manifold, where heat and vibration wear through insulation. A coil whose resistance has collapsed gives the same picture. No carmaker documents P2663 publicly with thresholds. The principle can be seen in GM's 15OBDG05 table for 2015 four-cylinders on the matching actuator A circuit, with 100 failures in 120 samples above 11 V triggering a Type A fault. CARB counts circuit shorts among the faults to be caught. Many drivers switch off for protection, leaving stage B on that bank idle. Bank 1 equivalent: P2653.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the car is running normally, drive in moderation to a repair shop. If it loses power or another warning appears, do not continue.
Bank 2 is the side without cylinder 1, so it only exists on V or boxer engines.
Symptoms
- MIL on
- Stage B on bank 2 out of action, power or economy reduced
Most likely causes
- Bank 2 control wire worn through and touching ground
- Bank 2 solenoid B coil with collapsed resistance
- Faulty output driver for bank 2 solenoid B
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: medium
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P2663 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 2: Generic code: same on every make
- 6: Control modules and outputs
- 63: Specific fault in that system
