P26DD: Engine Sound Control A Circuit High

With P26DD the module measures a voltage on the drive line of sound actuator A that is higher than the switching state allows. The usual reason is contact with a live conductor, for instance a neighbouring supply wire in a melted harness, or an internal fault in the actuator that feeds battery voltage back. The flap or valve may then stay energised regardless of the selected mode. Ford's 2014 code interpretation for its engine controllers carries P26DD with the lamp marking, without stating limits, and no other maker documents it. P26DB stands for an open circuit and P26DC for a grounded line, so here the search centres on harness sections where the drive wire runs alongside a supply line.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the car is running normally, drive in moderation to a repair shop. If it loses power or another warning appears, do not continue.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Valve stays in one position, sound permanently loud or quiet

Most likely causes

  • Drive wire shorted to a supply wire, often where heat has damaged the harness
  • Internal fault in the actuator feeding voltage back into the drive line
  • Incorrect or aftermarket actuator with different electrical layout
  • Output stage of the controlling module defective

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P26DD means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 6: Control modules and outputs
  • DD: Specific fault in that system
