P273B is the apply-time check for an eighth shift element, H, and therefore only applies to gearboxes with at least eight clutches and brakes. The test is the same as for its siblings: the time between command and full engagement is compared with a calibrated window, and a result outside it sets the code. No manufacturer documents P273B publicly. Ford's 2012 OBD summary notes that its newer automatics report clutch faults through solenoid stuck-on/stuck-off codes instead of the older element codes, which shows these generic apply-time codes are optional for a maker. CARB still expects transmission controls to be monitored where they affect emissions. Element H shares nothing with P273A except the method; mixing up the letters across gearboxes leads to the wrong part being replaced.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive gently to a repair shop. If it slips, you hear clunks, or it loses its gears, do not keep driving.
Symptoms
- Delayed or harsh shifts involving element H
- MIL lit
- Transmission in fail-safe mode
Most likely causes
- Pressure loss in the apply circuit of element H (seals, valve body)
- Slow-responding valve controlling element H
- Worn friction plates of element H
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P273B means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 2: Generic code: same on every make
- 7: Transmission
- 3B: Specific fault in that system
