P2705 covers the sixth friction element, F, so only transmissions with at least six shift elements use it, such as Ford's ten-speed and eight-speed families. The controller has found that F applies outside the time it has learned. Ford's SSM 50617 for Edge ST and Nautilus models from 2020 to 2022 with the 8F57 built up to 18 March 2022 reports cars returning to Park when drive or reverse is selected; the main code is P2707, and P2705 may accompany it. The cause is the F clutch piston, which serves second and eighth gear and whose rubber sealing surface can be damaged. On the 10R140, TSB 20-2375 includes P2705 among the codes from sticking main control valves and lets all six clutches be cycled. Roush's propane Ford chassis store P2705 without MIL.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive gently to a repair shop. If it slips, you hear clunks, or it loses its gears, do not keep driving.
Symptoms
- Harsh or slipping shifts in the gears using clutch F
- Vehicle may fall back into Park when drive or reverse is selected (Ford 8F57)
- Warning light on
Most likely causes
- Damaged F clutch piston seal (Ford 8F57)
- Sticking valves in the main control valve body
- Shift solenoid F not controlling pressure correctly
- Low or degraded transmission fluid
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P2705 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 2: Generic code: same on every make
- 7: Transmission
- 05: Specific fault in that system
