P2787: Clutch A Temperature Too High

P2787 means the controller has calculated or measured a temperature for clutch A above its permitted limit. Two quite different uses are documented. Stellantis bulletin 21-040-26 lists P2787-00 as clutch 1 overtemperature for 2022-2025 European Jeep Renegade and Compass with the 1.5 litre mild hybrid and the 7HDT300 dual-clutch gearbox; the MIL is on, P27F3 for clutch 2 and actuator motor phase faults may appear too, and particles blocking an actuator pump are named as the cause. Mercedes-Benz bulletin LI33.30-N-080795 for the Sprinter 907 with on-demand all-wheel drive shows P27874B in the transfer case unit N15: a failed front differential lets the coupling slip and overheat, and all-wheel drive is switched off. Clutch B has its own code, P27F3.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive gently to a repair shop. If it slips, you hear clunks, or it loses its gears, do not keep driving.

Symptoms

  • Overheating message, odd gears or all-wheel drive unavailable
  • MIL or transmission warning lamp on
  • Shudder or slipping when pulling away

Most likely causes

  • Clutch slipping because its actuator or actuator pump does not deliver full force
  • On all-wheel-drive couplings, damaged front differential forcing constant slip
  • Repeated launches, creeping or towing with high clutch slip
  • Worn friction lining reducing torque capacity

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.

What each character of P2787 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 7: Transmission
  • 87: Specific fault in that system

Frequently asked questions

What causes code P2787?

The most common causes are: clutch slipping because its actuator or actuator pump does not deliver full force; on all-wheel-drive couplings, damaged front differential forcing constant slip; repeated launches, creeping or towing with high clutch slip.
