P2AFA: Starter Relay D Stuck On

P2AFA describes starter relay D staying engaged although the control module has commanded it to release; the module infers this from a feedback signal, a voltage or current that should have changed. No manufacturer documents P2AFA publicly. The closest published case is relay C at Stellantis, where Starter Relay 3 Stuck On (P2AF5) is detected from the voltage gap between main and auxiliary battery. A relay welded closed in a cranking path can keep the starter spinning after the engine fires, which risks damage to starter and ring gear, whereas a stuck battery isolation relay mainly blocks stop-start and the charging of the second battery. Causes are welded contacts, a live control wire (see P2AF9) or a faulty driver. The opposite stuck fault is P2AFB.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If it starts normally you can keep driving, but avoid stopping anywhere you could not get help, because it might not restart.

Symptoms

  • Starter keeps turning or grinding after the engine starts
  • Stop-start disabled
  • Battery drain while parked

Most likely causes

  • Welded relay contacts
  • Control wire receiving voltage from another circuit
  • Output driver not switching off

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium

What each character of P2AFA means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • A: Hybrid or air and fuel
  • FA: Specific fault in that system
