P08BB: Pressure Control Solenoid L Performance/Stuck Off

Set when pressure control solenoid L is commanded but the pressure or shift element it serves does not respond, i.e. the valve acts as if it were stuck in its off state. No manufacturer documents this code publicly. Toyota, the only known user of letter L, reports a stuck valve as P08BA with suffix 71 instead. The closest documented analogue is GM's P08C4 for solenoid M on the Corvette dual clutch, where an intrusive routine moves the shift rods slightly and flags the valve when the expected rod travel stays below 100 µm. CARB requires such functional checks for transmission solenoids. P08BC is the opposite fault, P08BF to P08C2 cover the circuit. The driver notices missing or harsh shifts.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and gently. If the transmission slips or stays in one gear, go slowly to a repair shop or call for a tow truck.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Missing, slipping or delayed shifts
  • Possible substitute gear operation

Most likely causes

  • Valve spool held closed by debris or varnish
  • Low fluid level or weak supply pressure to the valve
  • Leaking seal or circuit downstream of the valve

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P08BB means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 8: Transmission
  • BB: Specific fault in that system
