The module that drives the shift lock (brake transmission shift interlock, BTSI) sees no continuity on control circuit A, so it cannot reliably release the selector from Park. FCA/Chrysler uses the code as P0928-00 BTSI Control: bulletin 08-072-14 (2013-14 Ram 1500, 2014 Durango with 8-speed) and 21-034-15 (2015 Chrysler 300 rotary shifter) name it when the selector will not leave Park or the knob turns without the brake applied; the cure there is a new electronic shifter. P0929 is the plausibility fault, P0930 and P0931 the low and high faults of circuit A, P092A the same open fault on circuit B. The driver usually cannot shift out of Park until the fault clears or the manual release is used.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and gently. If the transmission slips or stays in one gear, go slowly to a repair shop or call for a tow truck.
Symptoms
- Selector lever will not move out of Park even with the brake pressed
- Problem may disappear after the ignition is switched off and the modules go to sleep
- Rotary or electronic shifter can be moved without the brake applied
- Shift position flashes or a message asks to return the selector to Park
Most likely causes
- Internal fault in the electronic shifter module, often logged together with P0607 (documented by FCA)
- Shift lock solenoid coil open
- Broken wire, poorly crimped or pushed-out terminal on the shift lock circuit
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: medium
What each character of P0928 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- 9: Transmission
- 28: Specific fault in that system
