The control module reads a voltage on shift lock circuit A that is higher than the commanded state allows. FCA documents the code directly: in recall 16V-249 the Jefferson North plant found 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK) vehicles with active or stored P0931-00 whose selector would not release from Park. The cause was a badly crimped terminal on the BTSI solenoid harness from shifter supplier GHSP; FCA replaced the gear selector and warned that losing the solenoid could leave the lever locked in Park or Neutral. So a poor connection, not only a short to battery, can show up as High. P0930 is the low, P0928 the open fault of circuit A; P092D is the high fault on circuit B.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and gently. If the transmission slips or stays in one gear, go slowly to a repair shop or call for a tow truck.
Symptoms
- Selector lever will not release from Park
- Lever may lock in Park or Neutral unexpectedly after stopping
- Fault comes and goes with vibration or temperature
Most likely causes
- Poorly crimped or loose terminal on the shift lock solenoid harness (FCA recall 16V-249)
- Control wire shorted to a supply voltage
- Open shift lock solenoid coil seen as high voltage by a low-side driver
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: medium
What each character of P0931 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- 9: Transmission
- 31: Specific fault in that system
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep driving with code P0931?
Drive as little as possible and gently. If the transmission slips or stays in one gear, go slowly to a repair shop or call for a tow truck.
What causes code P0931?
The most common causes are: poorly crimped or loose terminal on the shift lock solenoid harness (FCA recall 16V-249); control wire shorted to a supply voltage; open shift lock solenoid coil seen as high voltage by a low-side driver.
