The motor A sensor is an NTC thermistor, so its signal voltage falls as the winding heats; Hyundai's Sonata Hybrid bulletin gives about 11 to 13 kOhm at 20 °C for 2014-15 units. P0A2C means the voltage is too low, which the module reads as an impossibly hot motor: GM sets it on 2013 two-mode trucks above 230 °C (near 0 V), Type B, two trips; the 2011 table uses 184 °C, the 2013 MGU mild hybrid 236 °C. The usual cause is a signal wire shorted to ground or a shorted sensor. P0A2D is the opposite fault, P0A2F a real over-temperature that only counts while the sensor is in range. Hyundai reports a stuck 417 °F reading as a circuit fault. The driver sees a warning and derated electric drive.
High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.
Symptoms
- Hybrid system warning or check engine light
- Motor temperature shows a very high fixed value in live data
- Electric drive power reduced or disabled
Most likely causes
- Sensor signal wire shorted to ground
- Thermistor internally shorted (often only with transaxle or motor)
- Chafed extension harness between drive unit and inverter
- Faulty sensor input in the inverter/motor control module
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0A2C means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- A: Hybrid or air and fuel
- 2C: Specific fault in that system
