P0C64: Generator Position Sensor Circuit A

P0C64 is the catch-all entry for the first pickup circuit of the generator resolver, the sensor that reports rotor angle so the inverter can energise the generator phases at the right moment. It is used when the controller judges that circuit faulty without sorting the fault into low, high, implausible or sporadic. No manufacturer documents P0C64 publicly. Mitsubishi shows how such faults get split on the 2023 Outlander PHEV: the sine winding, which it treats as circuit A, has its own low and high codes (P0C66, P0C67), and a failed internal status goes to P0A4B. CARB asks for an approved generator monitoring plan and for circuit and range checks on hybrid inputs. Expect a hybrid system warning and, depending on the design, reduced power or no charging by the engine.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the battery warning light comes on, you could get stranded. Turn off electrical accessories and go straight to a repair shop.

Symptoms

  • Hybrid system or malfunction indicator lamp on
  • Engine runs but the high-voltage battery is no longer charged by the generator
  • Reduced power or hybrid functions disabled

Most likely causes

  • Open, chafed or shorted lead in the first resolver pickup winding circuit
  • Corroded or loose resolver connector between generator and inverter
  • Damaged pickup winding inside the generator resolver stator
  • Fault in the generator control electronics of the inverter or power drive unit

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0C64 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • C: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 64: Specific fault in that system
