P0C66: Generator Position Sensor Circuit A Low

P0C66 means the signal of circuit A of the generator resolver has dropped below its lower limit. Mitsubishi uses it on the 2023 Outlander PHEV for the sine winding: the generator control unit, supplied with at least 8 V, watches the line continuously and sets the code when the sine voltage stays at or below 2.000 V for 0.21 s. A short to ground on a sine lead or a damaged winding are the classic causes; a Bosch patent shows that the averaged potential of the coil lines reveals whether a lead touches ground or supply. Mitsubishi first checks for radiator fan codes and tests the resolver circuit, and replaces the power drive unit, or later the generator, only if the code comes back. P0C67 is the high counterpart, P0C6B the same test on the cosine side.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the battery warning light comes on, you could get stranded. Turn off electrical accessories and go straight to a repair shop.

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp and hybrid warning shortly after switching on
  • Generator out of service, no charging by the engine
  • Reduced driving power

Most likely causes

  • Sine lead of the resolver shorted to ground or to the housing
  • Shorted or damaged sine winding in the generator resolver
  • Faulty input stage in the power drive unit (generator control unit)
  • Damaged or contaminated resolver connector pins

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0C66 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • C: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 66: Specific fault in that system
