P0CD3: Charge Port Door A Unlock Control Circuit Low

P0CD3 narrows the unlock output fault of charge flap A down to a low level: the monitored voltage on the actuator or relay control line stays near ground when it should be higher, which typically means a short to ground on the control wire or a failed actuator coil pulling the line down. No manufacturer documents this code publicly. GM's Volt tables of 2011 and 2012 fold the short to ground into the combined circuit code P0CD1 instead of using P0CD3. CARB 13 CCR 1968.2 (e)(15) asks for circuit checks on outputs only where emissions or other diagnostics depend on them. The GM charge port patent illustrates the actuator that this output powers. The high-side case is P0CD4, the functional test P0CD2. A driver usually finds that the flap no longer releases, and a blown fuse is possible.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the car is running normally, drive in moderation to a repair shop. If it loses power or another warning appears, do not continue.

Symptoms

  • Charge flap does not unlock
  • Possibly blown fuse in the actuator supply

Most likely causes

  • Actuator control wire shorted to ground
  • Shorted winding in the unlock actuator
  • Water in the actuator connector

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium

What each character of P0CD3 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • C: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • D3: Specific fault in that system
