P0D34 is the general code for the current flowing through the high-voltage battery system as a whole. The pack current sensor codes P0ABF-P0AC3 judge the sensor signal; this group judges whether the current itself fits the operating state. No manufacturer documents P0D34 publicly, and its set conditions are not published. A plausible reading is a current that does not match what the inverters, the charger and the DC/DC converter should draw, or current flow while the contactors are open. Ford's patent on in-range current sensor faults shows one way to check: amp-hours counted from the measured current are compared with the shift in charge level derived from the open-circuit voltage. CARB requires battery system performance to be monitored. Unstable, low and high current are P0D35, P0D36 and P0D37.
High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.
Symptoms
- Hybrid system warning or MIL
- Reduced electric power or charging restrictions
Most likely causes
- Battery current sensor reads wrong but within range
- Battery controller software or calibration
- Unexpected current path in the HV system (contactor, consumer)
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0D34 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- D: Subsystem depends on the code range
- 34: Specific fault in that system
