P0D37: Hybrid/EV Battery System Current High

P0D37 records excessive current in the high-voltage battery system. Mitsubishi describes it for the 2023 Outlander PHEV: the PHEV-ECU watches the HV circuit for overcurrent whenever the car is ready or charging. Because such a current can damage the contact points of the contactors, the manual requires junction box No. 2 to be replaced, then asks whether the battery controllers, on-board charger, DC/DC converter, A/C unit, power drive unit or rear motor unit store a code, since one of them usually caused the surge; a recurring code within 20 minutes leads to the PHEV-ECU and the drive battery. Mitsubishi shows only the EV system warning, while Ford lists P0D37 with MIL and wrench lamp. Low current is P0D36; a sensor stuck high is P0AC2.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • EV or hybrid system warning, with MIL on some makes
  • High-voltage system switches off, car not ready or not charging

Most likely causes

  • Short or fault in an HV component (charger, DC/DC, A/C, inverter)
  • Contactor points damaged by the overcurrent (junction box)
  • Damaged high-voltage cable
  • Hybrid control unit or battery fault (code returns)

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0D37 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • D: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 37: Specific fault in that system
