P0D36: Hybrid/EV Battery System Current Low

P0D36 means the battery system delivers or accepts less current than the controller expects for the power it commanded. No manufacturer documents a threshold publicly. Low current can come from high resistance in the high-voltage path, a contactor that does not close properly, an opened fuse in a branch circuit, a pack with high internal resistance, or a sensor that reads too low. The last case is hard to spot: Ford's patent explains that a sensor stuck at a plausible value passes simple range tests and is only found when integrated current is checked against the charge level implied by battery voltage. CARB requires the battery and charging functions to be monitored. Drivers notice weaker electric drive, little regeneration or slow charging. Overcurrent is P0D37; sensor circuit faults are P0AC0-P0AC2.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • Reduced electric power and regeneration
  • Slow charging
  • Hybrid system warning or MIL

Most likely causes

  • High resistance in the HV path or contactor not closing properly
  • Current sensor stuck at a plausible but too low value
  • Aged battery pack with high internal resistance

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0D36 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • D: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 36: Specific fault in that system
