In a three-phase machine the currents of phases U, V and W add up to nearly zero at every instant, so a sum far from zero shows that at least one current sensor is wrong. P0DFA is the code for this cross-check on the generator side. Mitsubishi documents it for the Outlander PHEV: with the IGBTs switching, the summation check must not report a failure, and with them off the sum must stay below 140 A; either condition held for 0.35 s sets P0DFA-00. Ford counts P0DFA among the generator inverter faults of its power-split hybrids, and SSM 50151 notes that on 2020 to 2021 hybrid models it can be caused by a 12 V dip at key-on, so check for low voltage first. Single-phase sensor faults are P0E00 to P0E0B.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the battery warning light comes on, you could get stranded. Turn off electrical accessories and go straight to a repair shop.
Symptoms
- Stop Safely Now or hybrid system warning
- Vehicle may not start or ready mode is refused
- Generator shut down, restricted driving
Most likely causes
- 12 V voltage drop at key-on (Ford SSM 50151)
- One phase current sensor with offset or gain error
- Internal fault of the inverter or power drive unit
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0DFA means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- D: Subsystem depends on the code range
- FA: Specific fault in that system
Frequently asked questions
