P0DFB: Generator Position Exceeding Learn Limit

The position sensor of a hybrid generator, normally a resolver, is never mounted exactly in line with the magnetic poles of the rotor. The remaining angle error is determined once and saved in the controller; Hyundai describes doing this after assembly and again whenever the machine or its control unit is replaced, and Ford describes an in-vehicle routine started by a scan tool that sweeps the current angle and reads the offset where the q-axis current crosses zero. P0DFB means such a learned offset lies outside the window the software accepts, so it cannot be used for field-oriented control. No manufacturer documents P0DFB publicly. Possible reasons are a resolver that moved on its shaft, an aborted learning run or a faulty controller. A missing value is P0DFC instead.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the battery warning light comes on, you could get stranded. Turn off electrical accessories and go straight to a repair shop.

Symptoms

  • Hybrid system warning and engine warning light
  • Generator not used, reduced charging or engine start problems
  • Code returns after clearing until relearned

Most likely causes

  • Offset learning interrupted or run under wrong conditions
  • Resolver rotor or stator shifted after repair or damage
  • Fault or wrong software in the generator control unit

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0DFB means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • D: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • FB: Specific fault in that system
