P0DFC is stored when the controller has no valid learned position offset for the generator resolver. Ford explains it in the OBD summary of its power-split hybrids: the code appears when the resolver was not configured at the assembly plant or after the inverter system controller has been replaced, and the check fails if the value held in EEPROM is outside its accepted range. It runs continuously from 700 ms after power-up with 6 to 19 V on the 12 V system, and Ford's 2014 code list marks P0DFC as a MIL code. Volvo reported intermittent IGM-P0DFC00 entries without symptoms on 2016 to 2017 XC90 T8 models and later released new IGM software. After a module or generator replacement, run the learn procedure. The drive motor counterpart is P0C17.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the battery warning light comes on, you could get stranded. Turn off electrical accessories and go straight to a repair shop.
Symptoms
- Engine warning light on
- Generator or hybrid functions restricted
- Sometimes only stored as history code without symptoms
Most likely causes
- Inverter or hybrid controller replaced without resolver learning
- Software fault in the inverter generator module (Volvo, update available)
- Stored offset lost or corrupted in EEPROM
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0DFC means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- D: Subsystem depends on the code range
- FC: Specific fault in that system
Frequently asked questions

What causes code P0DFC?
The most common causes are: inverter or hybrid controller replaced without resolver learning; software fault in the inverter generator module (Volvo, update available); stored offset lost or corrupted in EEPROM.
