P0E44: Hybrid/EV Battery Pack Voltage Sense E Circuit

P0E44 is the basic circuit code for the fifth pack voltage measurement, channel E, which follows channels A to D (P0ABA, P0B14, P0B19, P0B1E) in the code list. The battery controller stores it when this input is electrically unusable, for example open, without a plausible raw value or failing a self-test of its measuring stage, and none of the more specific low, high or erratic codes fits. No manufacturer documents P0E44 publicly, and which tap a maker labels E is its own decision. CARB requires every voltage sensor of the hybrid energy storage system to be monitored as an input component, with codes narrowing the fault down to a replaceable part. Without this value the controller restricts or blocks high-voltage operation.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • Hybrid or high-voltage system warning lit
  • Reduced electric assist or limited battery power
  • Vehicle may not switch to ready mode

Most likely causes

  • Open or unplugged voltage sense lead or connector inside the pack
  • Faulty measuring stage or input of the battery controller
  • Blown fuse or open resistor in the sense path

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0E44 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • E: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 44: Specific fault in that system
