P0E45: Hybrid/EV Battery Pack Voltage Sense E Circuit Range/Performance

P0E45 says pack voltage measurement E delivers a value that is electrically valid but does not fit the rest of the battery data. Such a rationality test usually compares the channel with the summed block or cell voltages, or with a second pack measurement. No manufacturer documents P0E45 publicly. GM's 2013 two-mode hybrid trucks (Tahoe, Yukon, Escalade, Silverado, Sierra) show the method on channel A: their battery pack control module fails P0ABB once the gap between pack voltage and the added-up block voltages exceeds 50 V in 70 of 80 checks taken every 100 ms, Type A, one trip. CARB requires plausibility monitoring for battery voltage sensors. Circuit, low, high and erratic faults of channel E are P0E44, P0E46, P0E47 and P0E48. Battery power is usually limited.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • Warning light with reduced hybrid or electric power
  • Displayed state of charge or range jumps unexpectedly

Most likely causes

  • Corroded or loose sense connection adding resistance and skewing the reading
  • Drifting measuring stage or outdated software in the battery controller
  • Fault in the reference value, e.g. a block or cell voltage channel

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0E45 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • E: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 45: Specific fault in that system
