P0ECE: Hybrid/EV Battery E Voltage Low

P0ECE sets when the voltage of hybrid/EV battery E remains below the window the controller expects for the present load and charge. Its counterparts are P0ECF for too high and P0ECD for unstable readings. No manufacturer documents P0ECE publicly. Ford publishes a comparable low test for battery A (P0B25) on its 2019 hybrids, based on calculated state of charge: if any cell reaches 0 % for 10 seconds with the main contactors closed, or for 90 seconds with them open, the code is set. A unit that discharged itself during long standstill, a module with an internal short, or a balancing circuit that keeps draining one group can pull unit E down. The controller then reduces discharge power, so electric range and boost shrink and the engine runs more often on hybrids.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • Reduced electric range and acceleration
  • Engine starts more often, EV mode unavailable
  • MIL and battery warning

Most likely causes

  • Unit E deeply discharged after long standstill or a high self-discharge cell
  • Internal short or capacity loss in a module of unit E
  • Balancing switch stuck on and draining one cell group
  • Voltage sense fault reading low

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0ECE means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • E: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • CE: Specific fault in that system

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep driving with code P0ECE?

What causes code P0ECE?

The most common causes are: unit E deeply discharged after long standstill or a high self-discharge cell; internal short or capacity loss in a module of unit E; balancing switch stuck on and draining one cell group.
